Prototyping a practical way to report energy usage

With a legal requirement coming into effect on January 1st, 2022 (through the law EEG), the role of energy consumption reporting is now entrenched into the german rental market. Each landlord is now obliged by law to provide a monthly report of energy consumption to each tenant (something that is not the norm in Germany, due to the way buildings are often configured). ETA+ took this as an opportunity to explore the B2C market for energy consumption analytics.

Research

After producing some highly speculative designs of an energy consumption app aimed at tenants, I wrote a survey to collect some user input. Through this survey our goal was to understand what would even really drive people to become more involved with their energy consumption data on a monthly basis. Do people even really care? How can we connect a very abstract number to actual human behaviour? How to we make energy reporting less boring and more engaging?

UX Ideas

What if we created highly consumable superficial reports, but for those who want more out of their monthly reports can get it? Using a very productive exchange with energy anthropologist Babette Peulicke Slott , I created a three level system for energy reporting. This was based on the idea that users operate in one of two modes: first being fast, automatic and frequent and the other being slow, effortful and infrequent.

Workshop with CAMAO

With a rough business model developed for the app, we collected the core features, our research adn the the legal requirements. A design agency was hired to help us put together an MVP. A workshop took place with their lead UX designer, CTO our head of Product, a junior designer and myself. A productive discussion ensued.

Prototype

A couple of weeks later, the agency delivered a prototype that included our requirements and that expanded on the application based on what was discussed during the workshop. ETA+ is currently working on partnerships to launch this application to market, in a way that its finances are guaranteed.
